Tamagotchi is basically a digital pet that lets little girls take care of a kitten or puppy without the hassle of a real one. The basic functions are limited as the player does not control the pet but supports it. The options are to feed it when it is hungry, tell it to sleep when it is sleepy, clean up after it when it has made a mess, and any other thing specific to that game. The animal itself roams around of its own will, causing it to tire out, get hungry, and sometimes get sick. Some games have an aging mechanic to it so that you start out with a small baby animal, and end up with a fully grown animal. Some games even have a death mechanic, so after it becomes an elderly animal, or after a prolonged period of sickness that you don't cure, it will die and you will have to start over from a baby animal.

The question is how you make boys want it just as much; well you replace the kittens with dinosaurs of course! Digital Monsters, or Digimon for short, are credited to have been created by Akiyoshi Hongo but so much is unknown about him and his involvement that it is believed that it was just a pen name of Aki Maita who created the original Tamagotchi. Digimon wasn't just a strait copy and paste of the popular toy though, it added in the possibility of many different characters that anyone could have, and then allowed you to connect and battle them with your friends. The basic concept of any Tamagotchi is that you need to take care of the pet, so Digimon evolved into different stronger characters depending on how you took care of them.

These days the original games are harder to find and the new ones being made are more like the anime that later sprung up around it, but just like you can find Tamagotchi Online, you can find Digimon Online. With so little control over the Digimon's actions it's at first hard to see yourself having much fun with this old play style, but an hour later you will be crying as your Digimon recovers from an illness you saved him from only one health bar away from dyeing. The fact that you aren't in control, you can only help it go further not make it, that brings a whole new feeling of enjoyment that many RPG Flash Games have forgotten about over the years.
